AZ pusses out, Music Box Massacre Mastery and 666 Flags
Weekend of 10/13
We spent all week getting ready for our guests the author Chris Curry (Taste of Blood and Film Alchemy) who has also been a contributor to MK since 1996 and has been one of my better friends over the years, along with his girlfriend Julie who we first met on a trip back to Indy for a concert I was promoting as part of the Creatures Of Crystal Lake Tour.
I didn’t realize till we watched Smallville, noticing that we had missed an episode during last nights brodcast, that we had missed an episode since we were out buying supplies for our weekend guests. For Chris I picked up a case of Leinenkugel’s Beer and for Julie a bottle of dark rum. For Shelly and I a 12 pack of Miller Chill and also 4 bottles of Mead which Binny’s now stocks for me.
Myself I went to Trader Joes and got gourmet mushrooms and mojito simmer sauce, gourmet pepper and potatoes and a pound of crab meat to stuff poblamo peppers with. And then after work hit Dominick’s for $50 of halibut and 4 Maryland Crab Cakes which I planned to cook out on the grill.
When I got out of the cab after work Chris and Julie were waiting for me inside of the Holiday Club. I had a quick red Bull and Vodka and we walked around the corner to the flat. Chris seemed to love it from the get go. And I am “almost” done decorating. But this place is big, and big enough for guests, more than a few.
So we all kicked it on the deck till Shelly got home and somehow Chris and I ended up in the living room shooting the shit and Julie and Shelly were all over the back rooms of the house giggling like 2 school girls and doing each others hair and nails. And I dear reader was not in the way to consume. My lifestyle has changed so drastically that I am dead tired and usually in bed by 10 on weeknights and once in awhile that means a Friday. Well I was trying hard. I pounded a 4 pack of Red Bull, tried rum, and a few beers and then around 11 attempted to go over to Holiday Club. I lasted ½ a drink. Fatigue and exhaustion and an ill stomach from not eating. Yes, due to all of the chit chatting I did not make time to cook. And we entertained getting food at the H Club however, I had ½ a vodka/7 Up and split. About 15 min the trio found me at home in my Playboy PJ’s. I tried to stay up but knew if I pushed it that the next day at the Music Box Massacre and Sunday at 6 Flags would be a bust.
So I fell sound asleep for the most part and was up and rested and well and ready to rock. We slowly drank our java and dressed for the occasion, had breakfast at El Palamar and caught a cab to the theatre where we were welcomed with hugs etc. Chris signed a couple copies of his book for the auction and I donated a box of MK goodies for the cause. Chris and Rusty Nails exchanged signed works of their own and we spent time in and out hopping bars of the neighborhood, taking photos, grabbing eats, and Chris finally ended up doing an interview in a secluded side theatre with count Midnight about his upcoming bio on Ted V Mikels titled “Film Alchemy”.
I bought a few choice items to decorate the dining room and a few goodies for Shelly and when we had enough stopped at Brody’s on the way home which turned out to be a pleasant venture.
I’ll interject here:
I checked this place out over the weekend and met the owner last night. Just when we thought Wrigleyville had no place left for us, Bill moves back to Chi from Nashville and opens BRODY’s at the old Twisted Spoke location. I’m telling you this place is gonna rock AND HAVE LIVE MUSIC! He’s talking national and local acts.
Check them out on myspace and in person. The staff is the best! And the music and food rocks!
Ultimately it’s everything that FUEL was and more!
An eclectic mix of hospitality and attitude, Brody’s On Clark prides itself on claiming the title of “Chicago’s Ultimate Dive Bar.” Residing just under the “EL” tracks on Clark, expect for the energy and noise level to reach that of the trains running above when the bar is in full swing. The gorgeous staff of all-female bartenders are a wonderful combination of looks and entertainment, with occurrences of them dancing on the bar happening often throughout the evening. The classic smokehouse menu of barbecued specialties and plenty of other choices born below the Mason-Dixon line, will have you making sure to arrive with an appetite! Various drink specials can be found nightly as well as the often necessary Recovery Sunday Bloody Mary. Hours are 11-2 Sunday-Friday, and 11-3 Saturday.

Look what Metromix has to say:
This barbecue and rock ‘n’ roll joint quietly opened in the former Twisted Spoke space, but stay tuned for louder plans that include a grand opening and Halloween and the unveiling of a live music section of the space. With an all-female bartending staff, a barbecue and bar food menu, Jack Daniels on tap and a range of rock tunes filling the air, Brody’s takes on a very chill vibe. And, the bar is even going so far as to call itself the city’s “ultimate dive bar.”
When we got home after a few cocktails we sat around, ate pizza from Domino’s and Chris had blacked out
And this goes to say one thing, I was clear and coherent and overall sober for the first time in MBM ‘s 3-year history, My guest was the one passing ut on my sofa. I took it as a cue to hit the hay and we had a long day ahead of us at 666 Flags Great America!
The next day the weather forecast called for it to be the most pleasant day of the week. Clear blue skies, no wind and a temp in the high 60’s low 70’s. Well upon awaking Sunday morning we discovered it could not have been more wrong.
It was cold, rainy and then damp, yet we managed to ride all of the coasters that we had set out to and worse than the weather would only prove to be the over priced crappy food we had in the Mardi Gras themed area.
The ride home was exhausting. We were just damp. But it would be nothing in comparison to what news I would receieve the following weekend regarding the death of “one of us.”
